SUMMARY:Always a Boy (ASL Interpreted)
DESCRIPTION:ALWAYS A BOY\, inspired by Jo Ivester’s best-selling\, award-winning memoir Never a Girl\, Always a Boy\, tells the story of Ash\, a 22-year-old college student struggling to figure out his gender identity. Conversations between Ash\, the 12-year-old child he was\, and the 32-year-old man he will become allow the audience to observe what is typically a very private\, internal angst. This is Ash’s and his family’s coming-out story\, told with humor and warmth. It is honest and hard-hitting\, sharing the tough moments as well as the joyful ones. It is a story of acceptance in a family that always knew how to love but needed to learn how to accept.

SUMMARY:Ballot Eats the Bullet: U Matter!
DESCRIPTION:The play is dedicated to the most silenced voice in American history\, the black woman. This engaging choreopoem fuses jazz aesthetic movement\, elegant melodic voices in four-part harmonies\, truth-laced spoken word and beautifully crafted vignettes that engage all five senses and paint a portrait of what it means to be a black woman in America. The piece openly confronts topics such as identity\, politics\, healthcare\, relationships\, love\, and police brutality\, all told through a lens of tough love with a side of humor.

SUMMARY:Blue Monday Blues Jam
DESCRIPTION:The Kenny Dorham’s Backyard Blue Monday Blues Jam moves next door\, inside the warmth of the Historic Victory Grill for the few weeks of Austin Winter! DiverseArts began East Austin’s longest-running weekly blues jam more than 15 years at the Victory Grill. With the establishment of the outdoors venue\, Kenny Dorham’s Backyard\, the jam has enjoyed many fair-weather seasons right next door on East 11th Street. \nEach year\, once winter sets is\, we move the jam inside the Victory Grill in order to maintain the tradition and keep the players and audience warm after it’s too cold to perform outside at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard. Absolutely one of the best blues jams in the City\, each week some of Austin’s best blues players and vocalists share the stage and perform a range of traditional blues\, blue-jazz and soul. The jam is a professional-level open jam for locals and traveling artists alike\, with sign-up beginning each week at 8pm. \nThe jam is hosted by Harold McMillan and Assorted Chocolates\, featuring Darius Jackson on guitar and vocals. This ongoing series is a nonprofit project of DiverseArts and East Austin Creative Coalition; and serves as an active cultural preservation project aimed at keeping the performance of African American culture-based music alive and well in the African American Cultural Heritage District of East Austin.
