SUMMARY:Always A Boy
DESCRIPTION:ALWAYS A BOY\, inspired by Jo Ivester’s best-selling\, award-winning memoir Never a Girl\, Always a Boy\, tells the story of Ash\, a 22-year-old college student struggling to figure out his gender identity. Conversations between Ash\, the 12-year-old child he was\, and the 32-year-old man he will become allow the audience to observe what is typically a very private\, internal angst. This is Ash’s and his family’s coming-out story\, told with humor and warmth. It is honest and hard-hitting\, sharing the tough moments as well as the joyful ones. It is a story of acceptance in a family that always knew how to love but needed to learn how to accept.

SUMMARY:Blue Monday Blues Jam
DESCRIPTION:The Kenny Dorham’s Backyard Blue Monday Blues Jam moves next door\, inside the warmth of the Historic Victory Grill for the few weeks of Austin Winter! DiverseArts began East Austin’s longest-running weekly blues jam more than 15 years at the Victory Grill. With the establishment of the outdoors venue\, Kenny Dorham’s Backyard\, the jam has enjoyed many fair-weather seasons right next door on East 11th Street. \nEach year\, once winter sets is\, we move the jam inside the Victory Grill in order to maintain the tradition and keep the players and audience warm after it’s too cold to perform outside at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard. Absolutely one of the best blues jams in the City\, each week some of Austin’s best blues players and vocalists share the stage and perform a range of traditional blues\, blue-jazz and soul. The jam is a professional-level open jam for locals and traveling artists alike\, with sign-up beginning each week at 8pm. \nThe jam is hosted by Harold McMillan and Assorted Chocolates\, featuring Darius Jackson on guitar and vocals. This ongoing series is a nonprofit project of DiverseArts and East Austin Creative Coalition; and serves as an active cultural preservation project aimed at keeping the performance of African American culture-based music alive and well in the African American Cultural Heritage District of East Austin.

SUMMARY:Meera\, The Way of the Storm
DESCRIPTION:This online screening was recorded during the successful premiere staging on January 12 and 13 in Georgetown\, TX. Video will be available for streaming from Friday February 23 to Sunday February 25. Attendees will be emailed the viewing link Friday morning. \nMeera Bai\, a princess of yore\, gave her heart to Lord Krishna when she was but a child. She devoted her life to the Lord\, seeking to be one with the divine\, and breaking many social norms for her love. In her time\, she was an outcast\, yet today we know her as a trail blazer and social reformer. She produced incredible art\, built a strong following\, and did not hesitate to call out powerful men who took advantage of uneducated commoners. A poetess\, a singer\, a devotee dedicated to Krishna… and above all a woman of strength who dared to live life on her own terms… Meera Bai chose the way of the storm. \nBased on the play by: Usha Akella\nDirected by: Kanaka Sathasivan and Anu Nistala\nExecutive Producers: Vinitha Subramanian and Priya Subramony\nMusic and background score: Mahesh Mahadev\nSinger: Dr. Priyadarshini \nProducers: Kanaka Sathasivan and Anu Nistala\nChoreographers: Vinitha Subramanian\, Mumal Joshi\, Sweety Agarwal\, and Swati Kapoor\nCostumes and Props: Mumal Joshi\, Sonia Nimavat and Anu Nistala\nIndian music track: PM Audios & Entertainments\nSound engineering: Prism Recording Studios\, Tune Hub Studios\nEnglish music track: Tune Hub Studio\nStudio recordings: Hemanth Bhagawatula and Jayeeta Dasmunshi \nThis project has been financed in whole or in part by the City of Austin’s Elevate Grant Program. SUMMARY:Always a Boy (ASL Interpreted)
