SUMMARY:Zubaani: Celebrating Intergenerational Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:“Zubaani” in Hindustani translates to “through the language” or “by means of language.” It discusses South-Asian parenting tips and storytelling with folk\, personal\, and regional stories that build our common myths and community as people. \nThis event is the the celebration for season 2’s launch with podcast hosts and writers Salma Hussain and Upasna Kakroo. They will be joined by other writers\, parents\, readers\, and community members. Select guests will talk about their work. The event will host a book trivia\, and have a Q&A style panel discussion with the podcast hosts and learn about the journey of the podcast that features South Asian books and stories. \nThe event will be held online and participants will receive links to attend after they RSVP. \nThis event is a celebration of AAPI stories and books especially in the kidlit space and spotlights intergenerational storytelling. It is produced by nonprofit Peerbagh with support from the City of Austin Economic Development Department’s Elevate grant.

SUMMARY:VARTA STORYTELLING FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Varta at Austin will focus on intergenerational storytelling with a special focus on South-Asian folk music. We will have artists present Shadow Puppets from Kerala – known as Tholpavakoothu for the first time in Austin. Award-winning children’s writers\, Jyoti Rajan Gopal\, Reem Faruqi\, Meera Sriram will be signing books and talking about them in our creative panel. Poet Neha Rayamajhi and illustrator/writer Natasha Badhiar will have a workshop style event on poetry and art. \nWe will present an interactive folk storytelling performance with student dancers\, and also have a Bharatnatayam workshop with RootEd foundation. Local artist Akanksha Jain will lead a paper quilting workshop for kids. And UT professor\, Dr. Dalpat Rajpurohit will talk about his latest book. \nKids will have access to snacks and FREE ice creams. We will also launch children’s magazine\, Bento’s next issue themed\, “The Invisible String” that talks about intergenerational storytelling. The second season of Zubaani podcast will also be made available at the event alongside a digital archive project for folk storytelling from South Asia. \nThis event is made possible with the Elevate Grant from the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department.

SUMMARY:Varta: a Storytelling Festival
DESCRIPTION:Highlights and agenda: \nVarta will feature South-Asian artists\, writers and storytellers in the library in the heart of South-West Austin. \nOral storytelling from South-Asia: The festival will launch an exhibit of oral storytelling techniques from South-Asia. The moving exhibit will be displayed in the library and will be accompanied by the launch of an audio storytelling project focused on storytelling. \nChildren’s Storytelling and Activities: Drop-in hands-on story activities! There will be a chance to learn new stories\, color on various themes\, and celebrate the South-Asian culture with a story performed by local children. We will also have a storytelling performances from artists. \nLikhawat creative storytelling panel: Listen to local authors and storytellers on their inspiring journeys. \nDastangoi: Get ready to enjoy an immersive storytelling performance with a desi folk story. \nMusic and Dance performance: Families can also enjoy dance performances from local nonprofits and South-Asian artists. \nChance to win prizes\, giveaways\, free ice-creams\, and overall have a FUN day engaging with art\, literature and stories!
