Local Video Poster & VHS Box Workshop

January 31 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
$10 – $30

Step back into the golden age of cinema—when movie nights were an event, poster art stopped you in your tracks, and wandering the aisles of a video store felt like an adventure.

Join us for a hands-on poster-making workshop led by Craig Matthew Staggs, Texas-based artist and illustrator best known for creating the cover art for all four novels in the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. Staggs is also the co-runner of Minnow Mountain, a studio producing films and web series such as Earp and the documentary Tower. Drawing from decades of experience across illustration, film, and storytelling, this workshop invites participants to explore the visual language of movie posters—from bold blockbusters to cult classics.

The workshop will be facilitated by Ami Plasse, a NYC-native creative now based in Austin, with a background in Art Direction, Design, Illustration, and Animation. Raised in a city buzzing with transit systems, graffiti, music, architecture, and constant motion, Ami brings a deep love of visual storytelling and a welcoming, all-levels approach to creative exploration.

Together, participants will create original poster artwork and VHS Box Covers inspired by the blockbuster / video store era, celebrating the tactile joy, drama, and personality of analog film culture. All skill levels are welcome—whether you’re a seasoned artist, a film lover, or someone who just misses the feeling of picking a movie based on the cover alone.

Finished posters will be featured in LOCAL VIDEO, a community art gallery exhibition opening Saturday, February 14, at Something Cool Studios, and running through February 22, 2026. LOCAL VIDEO celebrates the era when cinema was communal, physical, and fun—featuring short films, local art, and a shared love of movies that shaped us.

Sliding scale donation: $10–$30 suggested
No one will be turned away for lack of funds—all are truly welcome. RSVP required.

Come make art, talk movies, and fall back in love with film.

This project is supported in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
